ABOUT
ERICA
My imagination as a child would take me to the moon. In my neighborhood of Rochester, NY, the asphalt streets became atmosphere, my tricycle transformed into a space shuttle, and scattered rocks turned into prized lunar samples. Back in my bedroom, I’d captivate an audience of stuffed animals with plays and songs, a passion that found its way to the school theater stage. Imagination and creativity were my guiding stars, shaping the way I saw the world.
I went on to study psychology (and political science) at the University of Rochester. There, I delved into understanding human behavior, including the blind spots we develop and the patterns we fall into. (It also led me to a frat party, where I met my partner in all things life and work, Jared Weiner, who was belting out Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer.” Little did I know that this perfectly “on-brand” moment would one day lead me to futurism.)
My curiosity then steered me towards politics, where I worked doing public policy in Washington, DC. Not long after, a mentor in my life – Edie Weiner (who would later become my mother-in-law) – introduced me to an unexpected opportunity to channel my passions and skills: becoming a futurist.
“A what now? A futurist?” I remember thinking, intrigued and slightly bewildered.
Over the next several years, I honed my ability to spot patterns and uncover connections. Early on, Edie told me, “Read science fiction. Think about how different futures will unfold.”
Futurist, Author, Speaker
So, I did. I dove into the stories and the possibilities – and that’s where my work began to take shape.
It, however, was quiet work. Because deep down, I wasn’t sure my voice deserved to be heard. I believed my ideas had value, but I doubted my ability to express them. Over time, I realized something powerful: the stories we tell ourselves shape the lives we lead.
So, what changed? Everything changed when, after years of fertility struggles, I gave birth to my son, Zane. In that moment, the significance of my work became clearer and more urgent. My lingering doubts about using my own voice melted away, replaced by a newfound purpose. I felt a drive to explore and express the futures we can create – not just for us, but for the generations to come.
I am not a fortune teller, nor am I trying to predict the future – it will always be uncertain. That’s part of the fun. Instead, I am a guide, an advisor, and a student of signals. Yes, we can look around and see a world full of growing problems and seemingly impossible solutions.
But my work is rooted in optimism and hope – hope that we can harness as fuel for action.
As for me? I chose to rewrite my story. I stepped fully into my voice, owned my truth, and began sharing it more broadly. It was a turning point for my overall mission of helping create a future shaped by curiosity, imagination, and a collective belief in what’s possible.
